workshop 2019 DUAL City Worshop

ASEAN Dual-City Joint Workshop – Rehabilitation of Sangkat Tonle Bassac, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Design Studio 3,“ASEAN dual-city joint workshop”, was held in Phnom Penh and Bangkok in the summer of 2019. The workshop that is partly funded under the “Re-Inventing Japan Project,” is aiming to develop urban visions suited for the Asian contexts. In the field of Architecture and Urbanism, Meiji University iscollaborating with 7 partner institutions in six ASEAN countries for this project. The first half of the eight-day workshop was held in Phnom Penh (at Royal University of Fine Arts and Institute of Technology of Cambodia), and the second half, in Bangkok (at the Meiji University ASEAN Center). The site on the bank of Bassac River is located southern edge of Sangkat district, between Preah Norodom Boulevard and Bassac River. Further south of the site, there are many new development especially along Hun Sen Boulevard built former lake. Contrary, on the east bank of the river, there is a large population of Vietnamese and local market.

The participating students conducted fieldworks on the project site in Phnom Penh and worked on their proposal in the six groups on the three themes: “Waterfront Development,” “Regeneration of Post- Industrial Land,” and “Housing.” After the interim review, the workshop moved to Bangkok and participants continued to develop their proposals for the final presentation.
