Workshop 2013 Nakano 2020

a_IMGP1490

This international design workshop will focus on the district on the north side of Nakano station composed of Nakano 4 and 5 chome. The focused district consists of variety of land uses such as single-family homes, multi-family houses, retail stores in various scales, civic buildings, office buildings, uuniversity campuses and so forth.

The urban fabric in this area is also unique: buildings have a wide range of different scales, and different street & block patterns are juxtaposed. Nakano Broadway located at the terminus of Nakano Sun Mall, a major shopping mall, in Nakano 5 chome is famous for its successful small scaled shops for sub-culture goods and attract many “otaku” people. Institutional buildings, new university campuses and office buildings in Nakano 4 chome district attract many citizens, office workers and students to this area.

Nakano Ward has a plan to build a new station plaza on the west side of Nakano Avenue, move the existing Nakano Ward office, and redevelop the site of Nakano Sun Plaza, Nakano Ward office and Nakano Tax office. This plan has a potential to transform the urbanfabric in the focus area.Students are divided into 8 groups to target the assigned areas shown below.

Master Plan for Nakano Station area

The four groups will prepare design for the organization of buildings and spaces for the study area. Issues of spatial enclosure and activation, circulation, parking, blocks and scales will be critical to success.

The Future of Nakano Avenue East

The other four groups will prepare designs for the future of Nakano Avenue East district that include Nakano Boradway. Based upon the existing physical and cultural context, it will be critical to consider how to utilize and / or renovate the Nakano Broadway. In addition to the issue of architectural design, the issue of historic importance of Nakano Broadway and “otaku culture” to Nakano will be the primary consideration here.
