Introduction of the Design Workshop, September 25 – October 3 2014, University of Southern California / Technical University of Dortmund – TOKYO – Tsukiji Master Plan and Post Olympic Urban Design Project – (USC TUDO Workshop 2014)

With the recent selection of Tokyo to host the Summer Olympics in 2020, a lot of planned construction for new Olympic venues will occur in the Odaiba area of Tokyo Bay. The site for the Olympic venues is planned for on what is now industrial landfill but occupies an important point at the northern edge of Tokyo Bay, and at the mouth of the Sumida River. A part of this plan is to move the current Tsukiji Fish Market with the introduction of a new road and bridge directly connecting the main part of Tokyo to the new Olympic venues.

This project will be to create a new urban plan for the Tsukiji and surrounding area of approximately 250,000 square meters, to incorporate the planned roadway and bridge, propose a new street pattern and layout, and to designate areas of new programmatic functions that will define the district post Olympic and for the future of this area of Tokyo.

We seek creative, sustainable solutions that engage the water as a natural amenity, and promote new technologies that can be utilized for transportation and energy consumption. We also seek environments, which advance a sense of community, human connections, forming a coherent community that advances and promotes creativity and the arts, small business growth, and connection to the Tokyo Bay.
