The Koji Yamada Prize was established to encourage and celebrate individuals in the field of architecture who are opening new paths for the future, drawing on their broad academic background and diverse professional experience. Mr. Goto’s achievements embody the spirit of this award, and his recognition highlights the continuing impact of his career in education and architecture, including his contribution to Re-inventing Japan Project in which Meiji Univsersity collaborated with univseristies in ASEAN countries from FY2016 to FY2020.

本学建築学科卒業生で、明治大学国際連携機構で特任講師をされていた後藤克史さんが，幅広い学歴や多様な経歴から未来を切り拓く建築人を応援するために設立された山田幸司賞（第4回）を受賞しました。ムンバイを拠点にアジアで新しい領域を切り開く活動を展開している姿勢や、本学が2016〜2020年度に実施した大学の世界展開力強化事業への参画の実績なども高く評価されました。なお、表彰式と記念講演会は、11月14日に大同大学で開催される予定です。

EXPLORING DISCRETENESS
-A Topological Notation as an Alternative to Compactness in Mountainous Village Design-

【Summary】
本研究は、日本の中山間地域における線型都市を対象とし、「小さな拠点」のような一極集中型のアプローチではなく、物理的距離を超えて、都市の“諸部分”から“総体を形作る集合論的アプローチを模索することで、持続可能な中山間地域の形成を目指す。

その手法として、「都市思考モデル」を構築し、多様な都市の部分集合の集合（都市の様相）を形作る試みを行った。具体的には、人口規模、都市形態、気候区分を基準に日本の中山間地域に位置する3つの村を比較研究し、共通する8つの都市構成要素を抽出した。これらの要素の複雑な構造を忠実にモデル化するため、トポロジーの概念を援用し、中山間地域の構成をトポロジカルに表現する「都市思考モデル」を作成した。

さらに、都市の構造的なつながりを可視化した「都市思考モデル」を“切断”することで、トポロジーの特性により複数の境界（部分集合）が生じ、新たな8つの都市構成要素の部分集合の集合が形成された。この思考実験の結果、357種類の都市の部分集合の集合を生成することができ、それは新たな「都市の状態」を示すものとなった。このモデルは、都市の諸部分の分離可能性と連結可能性を提示し、従来の都市概念にとらわれない新たな都市要素の組み合わせを探求するための手がかりとなる。

この新たな「都市の状態」を活用し、山形県西川町に具体的に適用し、中山間地域の存続可能性向上に向けた５つの提案を行った。

New Trends of Intertwining Research and Education in Science and Technology

Research and education in science and technology have steadily developed within the traditional academic system, but in recent years, new methods of practice, such as RtD (Research through Design), have been implemented. In addition, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), which has MOU with School of Science and Technology, Meiji University, has begun operating an Artistic PhD degree program. Taking the opportunity of the visit of Alexander Erikson Furunes, who teaches at NTNU and obtained the first Artistic PhD from NTNU, we will provide a forum to explore the possibility of developing such a new trend in Japan.

学外シンポジウム「理工系の研究・教育の関係再編への新たな潮流」

理工系の研究と教育は、従来からの学問体系の中で着実に発展してきたが、近年はRtD(Research throughDesign)など新しい方法による実践が取り組まれている。また、明治大学理工学部と協定を締結し新たに研究・教育の両面での交流を開始するノルウェー科学技術大学(NTNU)では、Artistic PhDの学位プログラムの運用が開始されている。今回NTNUで教鞭をとり、自身が第一号のArtistic PhD取得者であるAlexander Erikson　Furunes氏が来日するのを機会に、このような新しい潮流の日本での展開の可能性を探る場を提供する。

Professor Yutaka Sho

Yutaka Sho is a professor of architecture teaching undergraduate and at International Program in Architecture and Urban Design (I-AUD) at Meiji University. Sho is also a partner and co-founder of nonprofit architecture firm General Architecture Collaborative or GAC.

GAC has been working in Rwanda since 2008 with underrepresented communities to build sustainable and aesthetically engaging spaces while using the construction sites for end-user training. GAC’s work includes self-build homes funded by the 2012 Arnold Brunner Grant and which received the 2014 EDRA Great Places Award; the Masoro Health Center which was recognized by AIA Virginia, Dazeen, Architizer, SARA NY and Architecture Masterprize in 2020; and the Masoro Learning and Sports Center in 2021 which was awarded by SARA NY, Architizer, SARA NY, and Dazeen. GAC was the recipient of Best of Practice Award for Small Firm in the Northeast by The Architect’s Newspaper in 2021, and was named the Game Changers by the Metropolis Magazine in 2020. GAC is currently completing Rwanda Housing Project to survey and document 370 rural homes with architecture students from University of Rwanda and Syracuse, among others.
Sho’s scholarly research focuses on the roles of architecture in the global development industry and in post-conflict reconciliation processes. Her publications include “Five Aesthetics of the Global Development Industry: Building Low-Cost Housing in Rwanda” in The Plan Journal, “Regenerative Material-Human Ecologies: Investigating Mycelium for Living and Decentralized Architectures in Rwanda” in Design for Rethinking Resources from Springer Nature, among many others.
Sho received her Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Tokyo University’s Department of Socio-Cultural Environmental Studies in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design.

Professor Michel van Ackere

Michel van Ackere has been Professor in Practice at Meiji University I-AUD since 2024. He received his BA from Brown University in art and architecture history and his M.Arch from Harvard GSD in 1994, where he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the Julia Amory Appleton Travelling Fellowship, which funded research on traditional Japanese urbanism at Kyoto University in 1994-1995.

From 1995-1997, Michel worked at Itsuko Hasegawa Atelier in Tokyo, where he served as the site architect for Miura Art Village in Matsuyama. From 1997-2024, he was employed at Maki and Associates in Tokyo, working on the design team for the Sam Fox School of Art and Design at Washington University, St. Louis, the MIT Media Lab Complex, the Main Administration Building of Republic Polytechnic Singapore, and the Tokyo University Law / Political Science Learning Center. Promoted to Associate in 2007, Michel led a variety of domestic and international projects, including the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania (2009), the Jewish Community of Japan, Tokyo (2009), the Bihar Museum, India (2017), and the Museum Reinhard Ernst, Wiesbaden, Germany (2024).

After leaving Maki and Associates at the end of 2024, Michel joined the Tokyo office of Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) as a Design Consultant, and was elevated to Partner in 2026.
